Why is Regular School Attendance so Important?

Chilham St Mary’s works closely with children and parents in connection with attendance so that each child can achieve their full potential. By law, all children of compulsory school age (five to 16) must receive a suitable full-time education.

Once your child is registered at school, you are legally responsible for making sure that they attend regularly. If your child fails to do so, you risk getting a penalty notice or being prosecuted. You also need to think about the negative impact upon the following:

  • their learning
  • their friendships
  • their self-esteem and confidence.

Chilham St Mary’s monitors the attendance of every child in the school and in
partnership with the Education Welfare Office, we will work and support those
children and their families who are not attending school without sufficient reason.
90 Percent attendance sounds good, but means that your child misses:

  • one half day each week
  • nearly four weeks every school year
  • over one school year in a school career

Timekeeping is also important in the education of your child. If your child is persistently late then they are missing out on important learning opportunities at the start of the lesson.

The P.T.A. is a vibrant and energetic group chaired by Leona Adams. The school is immensely helped by the P.T.A. financially but also enjoys many opportunities for additional activities which enrich the children’s experience and provide fun extra curricular events!

Latest News (October 2016)
The P.T.A. provided refreshments and ran a raffle for a hamper at the Harvest Festival on 12th October at St. Mary’s Church. Many parents attended an informal gathering at the church before the service and new members are likely to be joining us soon!

We are in the process of arranging a Christmas Fair at the Village Hall (16th December from 2 p.m.) and hope to offer a disco for the children too.

We look forward to letting you know about all our upcoming events soon.
